Saloni DhruvPublished on May 02, 20227 sustainable swimwear brands you can find in India Upgrade your swimwear with these eco-friendly, homegrown labels Believe it or not, we are in May already! As the days get hotter, now’s the time to make the most of the summer and spend some time by the beach. Whether it’s a family vacation, a girls’ trip or even a staycation with your beau in a boutique hotel, the one thing you need to pack in your suitcase is a good bathing suit. While it’s hard to find good swimwear in India, we’ve rounded up a few homegrown labels that are not only making chic swimsuits and bikinis but are also using eco-friendly and sustainable fabrics, while prioritising local artisans and craftsmanship. The Summer House“Understated, and yet nonconformist,” is how founders Rekha Datla and Shivangini Parihar have described their clothing on The Summer House’s website. While the designs and cuts are simple, the fabrics and the craftsmanship are rooted in sustainability and ethical practices. Made from econyl regenerated nylon—a fabric created from waste including fishing nets abandoned in the sea, old carpets and fabric straps—their swimwear consists of classic designs but are reversible so you can get more use and wear out of each piece.Available at:The Summer HouseNadi NadiThink of glittering swimwear, just like the glistening waters of the ocean. This New Delhi-based swimwear brand is the sister label of jewellery brand ]Hannan. Working closely with artisans, Rishi Baweja and Bhaavya Bhatnagar founded Nadi Nadi to play around with fabrics and materials to create something they would personally use in their everyday lives. Wear it for a swim or wear it as a bodysuit, their swimsuits and separates are also ideal for a pool party or a night out.Available at: Nadi NadiEL SwimwearHailing from the valleys of Dehradun and living in Mumbai for 12 years, Esha Lal grew up around forests, mountains and tea estates. It’s not surprising that she finds inspiration in nature and turns her water-coloured, floral paintings into prints for swimwear and resort wear. Her swimwear collections are made from 100 per cent recycled polyester, created from pre- and post-consumer materials. She also uses fabric from Carvico, Italy, which promotes ethical production techniques that would minimise potential harm to the ecosystem.Available at: Esha Lal SwimwearGuapaIf you’re looking for a dash of colour to your swimwear, Guapa’s brightly hued collection of swimsuits and bikini sets are a perfect addition. With each collection, Patel Mehta tells a unique story from her travels, be it the desert city of Jaisalmer or tiger safaris of Ranthambore. It is also the only Indian luxury label that is stocked with Bergdorf’s, New York and Neiman Marcus. While the swimwear collections are made from biodegradable and recycled fibres, the label’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond that. To offset our carbon footprint, the label is building a Verandah forest in the Molai Forest reserve, planting one tree for every global purchase.Available at: Studio VerandahIZSIAfter wearing many hats, those of an artist, art historian and economist, when Vezotolu Vadeo and Shilpi Mishra— bothNIFT graduates—wanted to take their passion for fashion beyond college, the answer came in the form of IZSI. The inspiration for their unique, whimsical prints comes from nature, their travels to Jaisalmer, Italian artists, the human body and the texture of our cells, which truly define the phrase “you can find inspiration anywhere.” The designer duo also use sustainable econyl fabric made out of recycled ocean-waste polyester. If your holidays are on the beaches of France or in the crystal-clearwaters of the Maldives, we think you should pack a Shivan & Narresh swimsuit in your suitcase.Available at: Shivan & NarreshAlso Read: Why are homegrown footwear brands in India on the rise? Also Read: Why is the lingerie market in India still fragmented? Also Read: How to build a breezy summer wardrobe on a budgetRead Next Read the Next Article
