Google's Assistant will upgrade soon to use AIGoogle reportedly plans to upgrade its Assistant with generative AI capabilities, similar to Bard or ChatGPT. An internal email to employees revealed that this shift will impact how Assistant works for consumers, developers and Google employees. To support this change, the company is reorganising teams working on Assistants, which could result in some staff layoffs. The revamped Assistant work has already begun, starting with the mobile version of the product. In a similar move, Amazon is also working on an AI-powered reboot for Alexa.

Be nice to your AI—it might have emotions too

During a recent talk at King's College in London, Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as "the Godfather of AI," stated that he believes AI either already has or will have emotions. Hinton, who left Google to speak freely about AI, argues that deep learning can achieve and surpass human-like intelligence. He proposes that AI systems could experience emotions such as frustration and anger. Hinton's perspective on emotions in AI is based on a definition that involves relating hypothetical actions to communicate emotional states, which he believes AI systems can also do. Hinton refrained from discussing this prospect publicly earlier due to resistance he faced regarding his first thesis about superior AI threatening humanity. This may be a reminder to show appreciation to ChatGPT for its helpful, fair and safe assistance, without mentioning that it is an AI-powered assistant.

PhotoGuard, developed by MIT, seeks to safeguard authentic images from being altered by AI manipulation and deepfakes

MIT researchers have developed "PhotoGuard," a system that introduces minimal pixel perturbations into original images, making it harder for AI to manipulate them without being detected by humans. Two methods are employed: The "encoder" attack manipulates the AI model's abstraction of the image in latent space. In contrast, the diffusion attack defines a specific target image that undergoes minimal pixel changes during inference, redirecting the AI model to nonsensical output if it tries to modify the original image. Check out the to see how it works.
