6 wireless earphones to amp up your workout

A round-up of the most apt pairs of wireless earphones to accompany your exercise routine

The ESTD Recommends: Welcome to The ESTD Recommends, our series where we cut through the clutter to bring you the best options available in the market.

Music not only has the power to inspire and motivate our soul but it has also been proven to improve one’s performance in the gym or during any workout and reduce perceived exertion. There is no doubt that music is essential to a workout. However, choosing the right pair of earphones for the job can be tedious. Currently there are several competitors in the wireless earphone space offering a variety of features across price points. We round up six wireless earphones you should consider before zeroing in on one.

Sony WF-1000XM4

Sony has carved a name for itself with its XM series’ wireless headphone and earphone space. The latest XM4 offers cutting-edge noise cancellation, a comfortable fit and 32 hours of total battery life. At the core of these earphones is Sony’s V1 processor, with an insane noise-cancelling capability, while keeping the power consumption low. The tiny six-millimetre drivers impeccably reproduce every note of your favourite song. The precision drivers are essential while playing hi-res audio. The Sony WF-1000XM4 is probably the best on the list if you want to make calls or speak to others. The V1 chip can cancel surrounding noise and automatically stop playing music once you start talking. The earphones have ipX4 protection, which offers adequate protection from splashing water or sweat, this making it ideal for the gym.

Bose Sport Earbuds

Bose is a household name regarding anything that has to do with sound. This pair of earphones has been purpose-built by the engineers at Bose to be more secure. Their StayHear Max tips will stay on no matter what activity you’re engaged in while wearing them. The buds–available in three colours–have a five-hour charge, and the charging case has an additional ten hours. The Bose Sport Earbuds are rated IPX4, which means they can survive a few water splashes. The earphones have the signature bass-heavy Bose sound, which is excellent for punchy dance music as well as peppy Bollywood hits. It may not, however, be the best pair to use in order to listen to western classical music.

Jabra Elite 7 Pro

Jabra’s wireless earphones have been popular for a very long time. They feature a comfortable fit and superb audio quality while making calls. This superior call quality is achieved by four microphones and a lot of custom software that can adjust sound levels, depending on the environment. The Elite 7 Pro also has an insane 38 hours of battery life, eight hours on the earphones and 30 hours on the charging case. The charging case is powered by a USB-C connector and can also be powered wirelessly. The Jabra Elite Pro has an IP57 rating, making it capable of withstanding dusty environments and splashes of water. The earphones are available in three colours, two of which are variations of black and the third one, a variation of white.

Shure Aonic 215 Gen2

Shure is a well-known audio brand, especially among musicians and audiophiles. The Aonic 215 Gen2 is Shure’s attempt at creating a truly wireless pair of earbuds. It doesn’t disappoint as far as the sound is concerned, and has the ability to hang on even through the most rigorous exercises. However, the over-the-ear shape poses challenges with its odd-shaped and larger-than-average storage charging case. The IPX4 rating means your device is protected from sweat. Like most audiophile-centric products, the sound is flat, which means that it doesn’t favour bass or treble. This is not a sound that many will appreciate, especially if you are looking for a punchy bass. The Aonic 215 Gen 2 has eight hours of battery life and a further 24 hours in the charging case.

Sennheiser Sport True Wireless

Sennheiser is another brand usually associated with audiophiles. The Sennheiser Sport True Wireless though, is an attempt to please everyone. The sound on these is warm and a little bass-heavy while being unbelievably clear. The IP54 rating makes it dust-, splash- and sweat-resistant, and hence an excellent choice for workouts. The earbuds are also super-light and comfortable to wear for extended periods. The Sport True has nine hours of battery life on its charging case, extending the overall charge by 18 hours. The four microphones provide exceptional voice clarity. However, it must be noted that this pair does not have a noise cancellation feature.

‎Klipsch T5 II True Wireless Sport McLaren Edition

While Klipsch is well-known for its home theatres and other larger audio components, its True Wireless earphones are just as good. The T5 II is both water- and dust-resistant with an IP67 rating, which means that it can not only take splashes of water but can survive an accidental dunk or two; this includes the case. The earphones fit well, and the design makes it secure enough to be worn while exercising. The sound is not neutral, though; instead veers heavily towards enhancing bass notes. This is a great option for electronic music and Bollywood. If you are looking for a cleaner sound, you will need to go with another product. The earbuds have a battery life of 9.5 hours and around 28 hours of charge time in the carry case. Other than hosting the Mclaren colours, the special edition earphones also have a built-in wireless charging case which is not available on the regular version.
