From a desi true-crime to a culinary docu-series and a superhero biggie, here is our watchlist for September

While September might mark the return for many of us to movie theatres for the first time since the COVID-19-induced hiatus, the string of new releases on OTT platforms in India this month also make a compelling case for binging on them at home. While a certain Bollywood fantasy biggie might finally succeed in drawing out many of the home-bods, we round up some of the newest releases that you can watch from the comfort of your couch, hot chips and beer in hand for a fraction of what they usually cost at multiplexes. Plus, this month’s releases so far are an eclectic list, including a desi true-crime story, the return of a much-loved culinary docu-series and a couple of fantasy options. Here’s more on them:

Thor: Love and Thunder on Disney+HotstarThe Marvel biggie featuring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Christian Bale has finally reached all our homes through the smaller screens. Cleverly written with humour as the key trope, this Thor sequel has a distinctively different way of narration than its action-packed predecessors. Without giving too much away, the plot follows Thor’s quest for love as he crosses paths with his old flame, Dr. Jane Foster and has to enlist help from Valkyrie and Korg to match the strength of Gorr the God Butche, played by Bale. Moreover, there is a cameo by Russel Crowe too!

Indian Predator: The Diary Of A Serial Killer on NetflixIf you thought “true crime” only meant watching an American thriller that involved dialling 911, think again. Netflix brings you the second installment of the desi version of true crime with Indian Predator: The Diary of a Serial Killer that follows Raja Kolander aka Ram Niranjan’s story of how he killed 14 individuals and the accusations of cannibalism against him. Notwithstanding the gruesome retelling, the series has won some praise for taking into account expert opinions that reflect on the killer’s mental health and social background. A Whodunnit like no other, this series will also give you something to think about as it presents the killer’s backstory.

Gutsy on AppleTV+Inspiration can be found everywhere, from among the people we see every day to new ones we stumble across in the course of our lives. And this is the premise of Gutsy, the new docu-series that follows Hillary and Chelsea Clinton as they go around talking to people from different walks of lives. While we might be fairly familiar with the stories of the Clintons, it is interesting to see them shine the light on others—even if they contexualise some of those stories with their own. From LGBTQIA+ issues to academics and firefighters, the eight-episode series sees a good spectrum, including Meghan Thee Stallion and Jane Goodall. However, the Clintons might need some more work to perfect their “casual” vibe in their new TV avatars as a lot of it is still highly reminiscent of their prim public persona. But the good news is that although Gutsy features the Clintons, it is more about the people they chat with than about them.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon PrimeThe series brings to the screen for the first time, the legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. Set as a prequel dating back to thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the series begins at a time of relative peace, following an ensemble cast while they confront the re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. It is important to note that the series is not a continuation of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies, though it cannot disregard its association and therefore the highest standards that it will be held against. With only three episodes out so far, the reviews have been fairly positive and the entire season is expected to finish airing by mid-October.

Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives on NetflixHold on, please don’t close the tab. No matter the mixed reviews, the reason why this reality series continues to keep its Netflix contract is because most people love to hate the stars of the show–Maheep Kapoor, Bhavana Pandey, Neelam Kothari and Seema Sajdeh. While there are some genuinely funny gems–read: Kapoor’s “How dare you talk about my plastic?”–the series is definitely worth a cringe-watch if not a binge-watch. Don’t we all have days when we need to do just that?
