From Chup and Kantara to Wednesday, Ghislaine Maxwell and Chippendales, there’s plenty of OTT content to choose from

Five OTT releases to tune in to this weekend

From Bollywood and Kannada films, a gripping docu-miniseries to the return of a childhood cult classic, there is plenty to choose from

On the heels of the holiday season, there’s good reason to ditch forced gatherings, curl up under the covers and spend time watching some very good content that has recently hit the OTT screens. There’s the ZEE5 thriller Chup: Revenge of the Artist where a serial killer is seen hunting down film critics; Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich, a Netflix documentary detailing the sex-trafficking trial of Ghislaine Maxwell, a socialite and accomplice of Jeffrey Epstein, and Wednesday, a new The Addams Family spin-off series centred on Wednesday Addams.  There’s also Disney+ Hotstar’s Welcome to Chippendales, which tells the true story behind the revolutionary all-male revue founded by Somen ‘Steve’ Banerjee in 1980s Los Angeles—a tale of male strippers, jealousy and murder stranger than anything Hollywood could have come up with. If you’re looking for a blockbuster Kannada film, Kantara will not disappoint. The movie, streaming on Amazon Prime Video, tells the story of a small community in Karnataka and underscores the land-nature conflict.

Chup: Revenge of the Artist A psychological thriller comprising a film director, his muse, a serial killer who kills critics, and a cop, this Hindi film features Dulquer Salman, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Sunny Deol and Pooja Bhatt, and won praise during its theatrical release earlier this year. Now streaming on ZEE5, the R Balki film, which is  touted as a tribute to Guru Dutt's Kaagaz Ke Phool, has the antagonist carving “stars” or film ratings on the foreheads of critics for the perceived harshness of their reviews.

Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich Since the Jeffrey Epstein scandal became public, there have been numerous twists and turns in the case that eventually led to his mysterious death in prison while entangling Prince Andrew and Ghislaine Maxwell, who is now under the law a convicted sex offender. After Netflix’s famous miniseries on Epstein, it’s now Maxwell’s turn as this new miniseries focuses on her story and how she became a part of a web of lies and deceit.

Wednesday Starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, the series by Tim Burton follows the character’s story at Nevermore Academy, a residential school for “outcasts”. While Wednesday tries to avoid social interactions, she finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery, leading her to sleuth around. Starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Gwendoline Christie and Nina Ricci (who played the original Wednesday in 1991’s The Addams Family), the series ends on a cliffhanger, which is a promising premise for those awaiting news about another season.

Kantara This Kannada film starring Rishab Shetty tells the story of a community in Kaadubettu, the southern coastal state of Karnataka, where death leads to conflict and how Shiva, a rebel, defends the village. With the underlying nature versus land conflict bolstering the plot, the film cuts through language barriers to become one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.

Welcome To Chippendales Based on Deadly Dance: The Chippendales Murders and directed by Robert Siegel, the series tells the story of Bombay-born Indian immigrant Somen ‘Steve’ Banerjee, who founded the first strip dance club for male performers. Pakistan-American actor Kumail Nanjiani plays the lead, supported by a stellar ensemble, including Juliette Lewis, Annaleigh Ashford and Murray Bartlett.
