Aninda SardarPublished on Jul 01, 2022Electric vehicles you should consider buying right nowWith the automobile industry introducing several battery-operated electric vehicles that have zero direct emissions and yet spell luxuryWith the world on the cusp of an EV revolution, we round up seven fabulous electric vehicles to choose fromAs human beings, pretty much everything we do, make and even eat, has come under the scanner of late, and is being compartmentalised into hazardous and eco-friendly. Using automobiles–thanks to exhaust gases they emit–was considered hazardous a long time ago. Now, however, the industry is up in arms to try and clean up its act and is on a spree to introduce battery-operated, electric vehicles that have zero direct emissions. So if you’ve got a heart that bleeds for the planet but isn’t quite willing to give up on luxury, comfort or performance, here are your options, starting from the bottom.MG ZS EV (₹ 21.99 lakh to ₹ 25.88 lakh) – If you want to start off with baby steps, then the MG ZS EV fits the bill perfectly. Plush seats, panoramic sunroof and all sorts of techno-wizardry–including a very handy and easy to use 10.1-inch touchscreen multimedia system–will keep your demands for comfort and modernity on an even keel, all ensconced within the silence of an EV. It is powered by a 50.3kWh battery and will give you a real-world range of around 350km, which isn’t bad at all. It is a great starter car in the world of EVs.Kia EV6 (₹ 59.95 lakh to ₹ 64.95 lakh) – This debutant from Korea has been receiving rave reviews all over the automotive media for its futuristic looks and performance. If you opt for a rear-wheel-driven version only, then 100kmph comes up in just 7.3 seconds. Take the full-blown all-wheel-driven variant and you’re looking at breaching that mark on the speedo of the 12.3-inch curved digital screen (one of two) that dominates the dash, and is done in 5.2 seconds! The fact that it employs super radical materials like recycled PET bottles in the cabin and vegan leather, only enhances the spacious car’s cool quotient. The icing on the cake? The 77.2kWh battery gives it a fantastic range even in the real world. Alexander HeroldBMW i4 (₹ 69.9 lakh) – Believe it or not, if you stretch your budget by just a few lakhs, you can move from the top-of-the-line Kia EV6 to BMW’s spanking new i4. While it resembles the 4 Series Gran Coupé, the i4 is powered by a 83.9kWh battery, which should be good for a real world range of well over 400km. The i4 also packs in plenty of performance, shredding the 100kmph barrier in just 5.7 seconds and is electronically limited to a 190kmph top speed. Inside, you’ll be treated to a 12.3-inch instrument cluster that has been fused with a 14.9-inch infotainment system–the BMW Curved Display. Delicious! Fabian KirchbauerMercedes-Benz EQC (₹ 1.04 crore) – The very first player in the luxury car market to bring in an EV was Mercedes-Benz with its revolutionary EQC. Its 85kWh battery allows the German marque to claim a 450km range, while 760Nm of torque ensures a nought to 100kmph run of 5.1 seconds. Its top speed is a very respectable 185kmph. The exterior may not look as futuristic as some of the other bits of metal you see here, but in the flesh it’s a good-looking car. Since it’s a Merc, you’ll have every luxury you’ll ever want on this side of a Maybach, lots of presence on the road and that lovely Burmester sound system. This one ticks all the right boxes. Daimler AG - Global Communications Mercedes-Benz Cars, photo by Daniel Maurer on behalf of Daimler AGJaguar i-Pace (₹ 1.06 crore to ₹ 1.12 crore) – Jaguar was one of the earliest movers in the luxury EV world with the introduction of the i-Pace. It looks lithe and dynamic, as any Jaguar should, but you’ll notice that there are few protrusions on the exterior. Even the door handles are pop-out units that retract into the body. This helps improve aero efficiency and allows the i-Pace to cut through the air smoother than it would have. Inside, you get a pair of touchscreens–a 10.1-inch and a 5.5-inch. The bigger top half controls the infotainment system while the smaller one below comprises climate control functions, somewhat similar to what we have seen in Range Rovers and Landies. A 90kWh battery ensures a claimed range of 470km, which means you can safely expect 350 or 370 in the real world.Audi e-tron GT (₹ 1.8 crore to ₹ 2.05 crore) – Say hello to Audi’s stab at giving us a zero-emissions vehicle, one that’s futuristic and fabulous. And what a stunning stab the e-tron GT–or its more powerful version, the RS e-tron GT–is. It looks every bit the two crore you’ll spend, with performance to match. The twin electric motors in the e-tron GT is good for 469bbhp and 630Nm, and if you’re particularly power hungry, you can always opt for the RS e-tron GT with its 589bhp and tarmac shredding 830Nm of torque. Audi says that the regular one is good for a 488km range while its pricey sibling will go 472km before you’ll have to plug her in. Naturally, in keeping with its futuristic and eco-friendly aspirations, recycled materials have been used to craft the interiors, and before you ask, it’s packed to the gills with luxury.Porsche Taycan (₹ 1.5 crore to ₹ 2.31 crore) – This Porsche sits squarely against the other offering from the VW Group, the Audi e-trons. What’s different about the Taycan is that you get a choice of batteries, depending on how much cash you’re willing to part with. You can either get yourself a modest 79.2kWh battery or a 93.4kWh one. Given that this is a Porsche, obviously the focus is on power and performance. You can choose a range of outputs–408bhp, 530hp, 571hp, 680hp and 761hp. The Germans say that no matter which of the Taycans you drive home, you’re looking at a 450km range and then some. Inside the car, you might think you’re in a multiplex, thanks to a quartet of touchscreens. A 16.8-inch instrument panel, 10.9-inch infotainment screen, an 8.4-inch screen for the climate control functions and an optional 10.9-inch screen for the front passenger.
